Two Potential California Teacher Strikes Averted With Tentative Deals
By Doug Cunningham
A couple of California teacher’s strikes have been averted. United Teachers Of San Francisco and the Sacramento City Teachers Association reached tentative agreements on new labor contracts.
After 13 months of contract negotiations Sacramento teachers had been set to strike Wednesday if there had been no agreement. And San Francisco teachers were going to take a strike authorization vote Wednesday but reached a tentative deal instead.
Class size, hiring quality educators and improving special education services were all addressed in the Sacramento settlement. Teachers in San Francisco got an 11 percent raise over three years.
Both tentative contracts are subject to teacher ratification votes before becoming final.
