Wisconsin GOP Makes State 28th To Call For U.S. Constitutional Convention
By Doug Cunningham
Republicans in the Wisconsin state senate have made it the 28th state to call for a new constitutional convention. It takes 34 states to actual call a convention to re-write America’s constitution.
The resolution 28 states have now passed says the purpose of the constitutional convention shall be “for the limited purpose of requiring the federal government to operate under a balanced budget.”
But once the constitutional convention Pandora’s box is open it could well turn into a runaway convention where other constitutional re-writes could happen. And since it’s driven by state legislatures controlled by Republicans America could wake up one day to a new U.S. constitution written essentially by Republicans.
Just fourteen states had legislatures totally controlled by Republicans in 2009. in 2017 there are 33 such states.
In 2010 the GOP was able to gerrymander congressional districts cementing the Republican state level political power and protecting it’s congressional seats. The constitutionality of that gerrymandering is being decided in a case from Wisconsin currently before the U.S. Supreme Court.
